Ian Thompson

I have been an amateur astronomer ever since I was fifteen, when I built a rotating observatory with my father’s help. Now, a long time later, I have no observatory, but still am passionate about observing. I would describe myself as a solar observer first, born out of reading W.M. Baxter’s excellent book “The Sun and the Amateur Astronomer”, but with a love of planetary and lunar sketching. I enjoy camping trips to dark sky sites, which are possible (with some determination) all year round. This photograph was taken on a mid-winter’s day, where my north facing terrace provides a sunny, sheltered spot from which to record daily solar observations.
