Alan Jones

I am an amateur astronomer, spending half my time in London and half in Rustington on the south coast. I've been interested in astronomy since I was a child, watching the moon landings, getting up at 2am to see a lunar eclipse through my Tasco 2 inch refractor, and later tracking the Mir space station.

Since my wife bought me an Astronomy course at Greenwich Observatory a few years ago, my interest has taken off again. I have a Skywatcher 8" Newtonian go-to with a Baader Hyperion zoom for back-garden observing, and a small Maksutov that I take abroad.

I particularly enjoy the public outreach events that BSIA hold at Regents Park, and seeing the wonder on people's faces as I show them a planet or star cluster. I'd like to think I might be contributing to their interest, or even their future career.

I'm now taking some university course units in my spare time, which enable me to make use of robotic telescopes in Chile.
