Taken on the night of the 12th Feb 2010 at 23:18. Using a C9.25 @ f/6.3 and Canon 450D (Hutech mod) I captured subs at varying exposure times,30secs for the core detail to 5mins for the outer regions of the nebula. Using a freeware program, easyHDRbasic I stacked the subs to give me this high dynamic range image. Final processing was carried out in Photoshop CS. Mount was an EQ6 Pro and autoguiding was carried out  using an 80mm f/5 refractor,Meade DSI and PHD. An Astronomik CLS clip filter was used to cut out the local light pollution. Alun Halsey

This was night of good seeing, and I waited to close to culmination for Saturn, so I think this picture shows something close to the likely best standard we are going to be able to get on Saturn this apparition from the UK. So it may not be worth taking a lot of images of, but leaving it to our southern hemisphere counterparts, who are achieving much better results. Transparency was very low and the blue channel at 8 fps and maximum gain was still very weak. The belt colours seem very muted this year. The brown north polar collar can just be seen and brown NTB. Damian writes: Here are some images obtained 3-4hrs past exact opposition with Mars 99 million km distant (twice as far as in 2003!.) Seeing was reasonably good at times. Regarding the CMO alert - there seems to be two localised dust areas on the NPC boundary, the primary one having moved south over Baltia, and hooking off in a north west direction. The second patch which is located just preceding the main one also shows some hints of a similar movement.

A stacked image of the enigmatic comet 17P/Holmes as it appears at the moment a little over one month before opposition.  I have displayed the image in two ways to best bring out the features.  George Faillace and I have the comet under scrutiny once again, looking for periodic variations in the brightness of the pseudo-nucleus or further outbursts.  We have applied for and were recently granted observing time on the Liverpool Telescope: observations are due to begin next month.  Note that there still remains a significant diffuse coma possibly indicative of recurrent activity or the aftermath of the massive outburst of 2007 October.  Comet Holmes will reach aphelion in October at distance of 5.19 AU from the Sun after which it will head towards more southern declinations. Images taken with the 2.0m Faulkes Telescope North. Richard Miles.
