Comet Section meeting

Venue: Humfrey Rooms, Northampton, NN1 1LD (click to see map)
Saturday, 2017, June 17 (All day)

Doors open 10am, talks start 10:30. Finish will be around 5:30pm. No lunch provided but there are plenty of places to eat within walking distance.

The BAA Comet Section will return to Northampton for its 2017 meeting and we are pleased that Alan Fitzsimmons has agreed to be our main speaker. There have been many developments in comet astronomy over the past couple of years and we hope to cover these along with practical observing aspects so that you go away with even more enthusiasm for observing these enigmatic objects.

A preliminary list of speakers (in no particular order) and subjects is given below. There will also be a "short talks" slot for short (10-15 min) talks. If you would like to give a short presentation on anything comet related please let me know.

Main talks

  • Nick James - Introduction and the Comet Section's work
  • Richard Miles - Monitoring comet outbursts
  • Peter Carson - Imaging comets from Southend
  • Denis Buczynski - Comet magnitudes:Some history
  • Janice McClean - Politics and dirty snowballs
  • Tony Angel - An amateur perspective on pro-am
  • Alan Fitzsimmons - Unlocking the secrets of Near-Sun Comets
  • Jonathan Shanklin - Periodic comets
  • Padma Yanamandra-Fisher - Current PACA campaigns

  • Simon White - Stereoscopic comet imaging project
  • Dave Eagle - PACA

Entry is free for BAA members. Non members are welcome but we may need to ask for a small contribution to cover the cost of of tea/coffee.  This will be confirmed soon.

If you are planning to come to the meeting I would appreciate an email so that I can get some idea of the expected turnout on the day.
