On this thread I’ll post images from Solar Section members keeping a current view of what the Sun is up to. The first image has been taken in hydrogen-alpha by Paul Rix showing the current active region AR1084 and a whole load of filaments. (South is top on this image.) The second image is a composite by Peter Paice showing AR1084 in white light with hydrogen-alpha and calcium K-line images superimposed.Feel free to post your recent images and post your comments!Lyn SmithSolar Section Director

There is a huge filament on the solar disk just now as this drawing by Erika Rix shows. It’s hurricane season in Scotland today so I hope you have better luck observing than me!

Below are two images by Dave Tyler showing southern sunspot AR1084 in Hydrogen-alpha which is now approaching the western limb and also a long filament in the northern hemisphere of the solar disk which has persisted for some days. Both images were taken on 3rd July 2010.

Image by Dave Tyler showing new sunspot group AR1089 in white light 0814 UT on 21st July 2010 still near the eastern limb. This group is developing into a substantial active area and is well worth watching as it journey’s westward across the solar disk. Remember your safety procedure when viewing the sun and never look at the Sun directly without the proper filters.

AR1093 and AR1099 imaged by Andy Devey in CaK on August 14th 2010 at 15.13.47 UT. Both these groups have now rotated off the earth facing side of the disk and are thought to be responsible for a flare and CME on August 18th on the far side of the solar disk.

Tom Moran imaged the Sun today 2010 September 14th. He obviously doesn’t live in Scotland where we are in the middle of a typhoon!

3 superb images from Dave Tyler. The first is a wide shot of AR1106 on the disk and AR1108 rounding the eastern limb 2010 September 16 at 1418 UT. The next 2 images were taken 2010 September 18 at 0850 and 0927 respectively showing filaments, a flare and sunspot group 1106 and the last image shows AR1108.
