I’ve been out of practical astronomy for about 15 years now and have decided to sell some equipment.  Could anyone give me even a rough guide as to what to ask for the following items please? A photo is attached.

Celestron C11 OTA  This is hardly used and has been in storage for the last 10 years.  A motorised focuser is included.

Takahashi Epsilon 160  Again, this has been stored for the last 10 years.

The Celestron was purchased by me brand new, the Epsilon was purchased as a used item.

    Many thanks.

The C11 on its own, assuming it is not damaged in any way, will sell easily for £1000. You could ask for £1500 but I don’t think it would sell. Part of the issue is that not many people can take a scope of that size, of if they can they may want the HD version.

    What is the motorised focusser?

    No idea about the Tak.

Thank you for the reply.  The focuser is the JMI NGF-S.

Age related Infirmities now limit my use of Meade 200 LX3.

    Multi-speed Drive-motor and Hand Controller..

Bought New with Astro-Tripod and Shipping Case.

Your thoughts on likely selling price would be appreciated. Thanks

I don’t know Meade scopes so am unsure what the LX3 200 is. I presume an SCT on an alt-ax mount, 8″? 10″?

Prices will greatly depend on condition, specific type/model, accessories and any problems. Looking online, I would suggest ball park figures for an 8″ would be in the region of £400-700; 10″ £600-900; 12″ £800-1200. But it is only worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it. My observations are that fork mounted Meade telescopes were once very popular, but desired less today by people buying second hand telescopes. I may be wrong.

The other option is to talk to someone like Rother Valley Optics and see if they are interested in it to sell on.

For what it’s worth, I have heard from a couple of sources that if you want to buy a Meade OTA it can be cheaper to buy one fork-mounted and then throw away the mount than it is to buy one not so encumbered. That is a pretty damning assessment of the quality of a Meade fork mount as it implies its value is negative!

Takeaway message: if your kit is fork mounted, try advertising the OTA and offer to throw in the mount at a small increment in price.

    As always, YMMV.

I would love to have the C11, so I am in that minority.

Unfortunately I can not justify buying one but I can ask around.

The Takahashi Epsilon 160ED retails now at £3,500. If this is not an ED version it is worth less, and being at least 10 years old obviously reduces the value, but they have a very good reputation, so I’d say if the mirrors are in good condition it should be worth at least £1,500.

Many thanks for the reply David.  I’ve made a bad mistake on this.  I advertised it on the AstroBuySell site for £650.  In view of what you’ve said,  not surprisingly I had an offer to buy within moments of placing the advert, plus several more very soon after.  I duly marked the ad as “Sold”.  The buyer has now pulled out.  I’m reluctant to reopen the ad however as it would appear that I’ve hugely under-priced it.  I don’t think it would be ethical to re-advertise at a higher price though?

P.S. It isn’t the ED version.

    The original buyer pulled out.
You are within your rights to re-list it at a different price. If people don’t want to pay the new price. If no o E wants it at that price, you could reduce the price and try again.
