This was an experiment to see if the colour ASI462MC or the mono 174MM produced the sharper image of Mars when combining colour and IR data for both. As an added experiment I also tried both with and without ADC but have only included the 174MM without ADC as I had some technical issues with the images with ADC for the 174MM.  With the current height of Mars the ADC made little difference to the final result for both.   Due to pixel size I had to scale up the 174MM images even though by using a 2x instead of a 2.5x PowerMate the SCT actually gives a bigger image at 2x.   Also the without ADC images were slightly smaller than with.   When the images are compared at the same scale although there is a wider range of tone with the 174MM creating greater contrast it was pleasing to note that the 462MC outperformed in terms of feature detail.

In my view the middle image is marginally the better image of the 462 images and both are better than the 174 image.

Interesting comparison Peter. Did you use a UV/IR blocking filter with both to remove the IR component?

Hello Martin

I took the colour camera image with a Chroma luminance filter blocking UV and IR, then switched to a 642nm IR filter in front to capture just the IR.  I did the same in IR for the mono camera, the mono also had a normal RGB filter sequence.

Peter
