Image taken 11hrs 50min UT  26th February 1987.

This supernova was discovered three days earlier and reached Mv 2.8 at maximum, remaining bright for months. Being in the LMC it was the closest supernova since that of 1604.

For ease of identification, it is the very bright object to the immediate lower right of the tarantula nebula.
