An eruptive solar prominence in hydrogen-alpha

This huge eruptive prominence was recorded by Henry Hatfield with the Sevenoaks spectrohelioscope on 1997 September 29. The velocity of the eruption was about 160,000km per hour. From left to right (UT): 14.34: height about 50,000km; 14.53: 93,000km; 14.58: 111,000km; 15.00: maximum blue shift, arc about 138,000km long; 15.02: maximum red shift. At 15.06 the sky clouded over, but at 15.27 the eruption was gone. (H. R. Hatfield)
