The Charles Butterworth Award

In recognition of the tremendous service Dr Arne Henden has provided to the amateur variable star community in particular, the Officers of the VSS decided to introduce a new award. The was duly presented to him at the recent VSS Meeting and here is a photo of Dr Henden receiving the award from BAA President, Dr Richard Miles.

The award takes the form of a plaque produced by Mr Alan Wright of Hatton Country World Warwickshire of a copy of an image of V838 Mon on a slate base. The plaque is engraved around the edge as follows: "This, the first Charles Butterworth award, was presented to Dr Arne Henden, Director AAVSO, on 3rd June 2006 by the Variable Star Section of the British Astronomical Association in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the observation of variable stars."

Dr. Henden was also presented with a copy of the recent Binocular Variable Stars Charts Volume 2 booklet and the booklet Measuring Variable Stars Using a CCD Camera - A Beginner's Guide.

Arne seemed amused to be presented with a beginners Guide, but I'm not sure why?

The audience falling asleep listening to the Director!
