Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
8th June
The East Antrim Astronomical Society are having a public viewing event on 8th June 2004 to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun. The venue for the Venus transit will be the picnic area just off the Ballymena Seven Towers roundabout, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. We hope to be there from around 9am to 1pm where we are planning to have a live webcast from Ballymena and a number of telescopes setup for observing. We will also have info sheets on the transit to hand out and a few short talks on Venus and explaining the transit. If the weather is variable we will still see the transit via one of the many international webcasts so do come along and join with us.

Bedford, Bedfordshire
8th June.
Bedford Astronomical Society will be holding an open morning to observe the transit. From 06:00 - midday.

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
8th June.
Cotswold Astronomical Society will be holding an observing event in Imperial Gardens, Cheltenham from 06:15 to 12:30, all welcome.

Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire
8th June.
The Beacon Hill Observatory of the Cleethorpes and District Astronomical Society will be open from about 06:15   until 12:30.

Herstmonceux, Hailsham, East Sussex
8th June 2004, 6 am-12 noon.
The Observatory Science Centre in Herstmonceux is holding a "Breakfast with Venus" on the morning of 8th June 2004, 7 am-12 noon. Normal admission charges to the science centre will apply.
A solar telescope will be available for viewing along with the chance to see projected images of the transit. Hastings and Battle Astronomical Society will be there projecting images through their own telescopes and offering guidance. Please turn up on the day - no booking required.

Knighton, Powys
8th June 2004, 7 am - noon.
The Spaceguard Centre at Knighton, Powys is holding a free open house on the morning of 8th June 2004, 7 am - noon (WEATHER PERMITTING OF COURSE). Bring a picnic breakfast and watch this rare event!
The main 13” refractor will be available for viewing along with a variety of other telescopes either fitted with filters or producing projected images of the transit. Help will be available from Centre staff and Black Knight Astronomy. Just turn up on the day - no booking required, and no charge.

The Leicester Astronomical Society will be holding a public observing session at the National Space Centre, Exploration Drive, Leicester to observe the transit of Venus on the morning of June 8. From about 6.30am onwards.

Liverpool AS have groups planning to view the transit from Liverpool/Wirral, the Society Pex Hill Observatory in Cronton, Cheshire, Much Hoole, Spain and Egypt. We will also be exchanging observational results with our twinned Astro Society, Vlasim in the Czech Repub.

Llandrillo, Wales

Llandrillo Astronomy Society will be deploying their Observatruck for observing the event.

London - Royal Observatory Greenwich
8th June 2004
Members of the public will be able to see the transit from the courtyard of the Royal Observatory Greenwich from 6 am. (The Blackheath gate to Greenwich Park will be opened at 5am especially for the event).
Subject to weather conditions, visitors will be able see the transit through telescopes owned by the observatory and the Flamsteed Astronomy Society. The BBC will also have a giant screen just outside the observatory, displaying live images of the sun transmitted from the Middle East where clear skies should be guaranteed.

The Manchester Astronomical Society, will open the Godlee Observatory for the projection of the Transit of Venus, from 0500hrs, on the morning of 8th June 2004, various means of capturing the images will be put into place, including local t.v. stations who are expected to attend. Peterchurch, Herefordshire
8th June 2004
At Fairfield High School pupils from across the Golden Valley in Herefordshire will be able to safely view the Venus Transit. The event coincides with the school's Beacon Day when Year 6 pupils spend a day at their new High school. It also marks 25 years of collaboration between schools in this beautiful part of rural Herefordshire. Special Venus Transit certificates have been designed for everyone taking part and members of the local community will be attending. At the MAGNA science adventure centre in Rotherham. Whilst the event is mainly for local schools, paying visitors to the centre are welcome to join the activities. Live telescope viewing (subject to weather), big screen projection of the transit via NASA, and a Big screen presentations on Venus, The Transit, and the history and science behind the event. The event is entirely weatherproof, as all the projections are being held in a 500+ seated indoor arena.

Stourton Caundle, Dorset

There will be a Public Viewing of the Transit from 8.00 a.m.from the village of Stourton Caundle in North Dorset. The event will be monitored through an 8-inch diameter off-axis solar filter on a fork-mounted 14-inch astronomical telescope, which will be located alongside the Trooper Inn near the centre of the village, weather-permitting. Tenterden, Kent

Homewood and District Astronomical Association (HADAS), will be mounting a multimedia presentation in the Sinden Theatre, Homewood School, Tenterden, Kent, on 3rd June, 2004 at 7.30. "Transits of Venus - Triumphs and Tragedies". Tickets £2.00 in advance, £2.50 at the door, £1 concessions (for tickets email martinfrey@hadastro.org.uk) Certified viewers for sale at £1.00 and will have a group of telescopes and binoculars available for public viewing at Homewood school from 6am on the 8th of June.

Whitby Transit Festival
To celebrate the forthcoming historical transit of Venus, a varied programme of events will take place in the town most associated with Captain Cook (commander of 1769 transit expedition to Tahiti) and in which all his ships were built.

At 5.00am on the morning of June 8th a replica of Captain Cook's ship, HM Bark Endeavour, will sail from Captain Cook's historic port of Whitby to witness the transit of Venus, just as Cook did in 1769. (Although the North Sea isn't as "romantic" as Cook's original observations planned of Tahiti!!)
