Radio Astronomy Group

Co-ordinator Dr Laurence Newell
Aims & Objectives

The Radio Astronomy Group aspires to encourage and support the construction of radio telescopes by amateurs, their use for observing programmes, and the development of a deeper understanding of the science underlying what is being observed. Programmes can be aimed at any radio astronomical phenomenon, at any radio frequency. This encouragement will be through the operation of continuing group programmes, and through building communication and information exchange between individuals and groups pursuing their own projects.

The main purpose of the Group is to act as a reservoir and clearing house for information on radio telescope design, construction and debugging, and how to use these instruments effectively. This will include the discussion of observing techniques and data analysis. Members should be able to exchange ideas, give advice and help each other. Establishing a pool of design information and software suitable for use in observing and data processing is a priority.

The Group is currently developing a 'plug and play' radiotelescope system as a PC peripheral of a simple modular design which will allow beginners and experts alike to easily set up an observatory. Modules will be available initially for solar observations at 2.8GHz, and Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances (SIDs) at VLF. Other modules are planned - perhaps you would like to be involved in their development? Please contact the appropriate member of the team below.

Publications

The Group intends to publish a newsletter, "Baseline", which will be the main platform for presenting the Group's activities and the members' observations. Techniques of observation will be discussed as will general news items plus the latest in-house software and hardware developments. Outstanding observations will be posted on the Group's web page. It is hoped that an annual report will appear in The Journal. If you wish to receive this newsletter, please contact the Secretary.

Meetings

The first formal meeting of the new Group will take place in the Humfrey Rooms in Northampton on 2005 October 8th. If you are interested in attending either as a speaker or as a Group member, please contact the Secretary. All contributions are most welcome.
