Asteroids and Remote Planets Section

Director Roger Dymock (arps@britastro.org)

Aims & Objectives

Near Earth Asteroids, the numbers continually topped up by those escaping from the Main Belt, have been making headlines for some years – certain impacts (according to the media) always, fortunately, turning in to near misses. The remote planets, Uranus and Neptune, have been left out in the cold being rather overshadowed by the Cassini/Huygens mission to their neighbour, Saturn. Pluto of course is fighting to hold on to its ‘planet’ title following the discovery of other similar sized Kuiper Belt Objects.

My objective is that the Section should be able to offer something to active, virtual and armchair observers. Areas of interest will eventually include; visual telescopic observations, imaging (photographic, CCD, webcam), virtual observing using on-line resources, orbital motion, the impact hazard, history of  discovery and observation, general understanding of the planets and minor planets and space missions to those bodies.

If any of this interests you then please contact the Director.
