Naimul Islam Opu’s observatory and instruments

Dhaka, Bangladesh

The photograph at right shows my home-made refractor, incorporating an 8-inch lens by Zeiss, which I used to observe Mars throughout the apparition of 2003. This is the largest instrument of its kind in Bangladesh. I have also made a 50-mm refractor and astrophotographic instruments, using indigenous materials, sponsored by the Bangladesh National Science and Technology Museum. I have been working to popularise astronomy, and in 2001 I was elected a research and development fellow at the museum. I am also in charge of the Astronomy Section of Anushandhitsu Chokro Science Organisation – the largest science organisation in Bangladesh.

On 13 February 2008 I completed the construction of my observatory. The instrumentation consists of an 8-inch f/10 SCT and a Meade DSI (2) CCD on an altazimuth mount. The telescope can be used visually or, with the CCD, can be controlled remotely (from my living room) using Autostar software suite. I am Indebted to astrophysicist Dipen Bhattacharia, and express my heartfelt gratitude to him for supplying the telescope for the advancement of astronomical observation and for the benefit of all Anushandhitshu members.
