Astrometry

Peter Birtwhistle, J95

Peter reports; After a disappointing January, February turned out to be very good, with 15 usable nights and over 100 hours logged, almost double the total for January. With this and a number of fast moving NEOs discovered during the month that required a lot of short exposures to record them, over 13,800 images were taken, the highest monthly total I've recorded.

Two bright NEOs with large positional uncertainties were recovered, 2006 DU22 was 15th mag. and moving at 34"/min when picked up just before dawn on Feb 9th. With a 3-sigma positional uncertainty of 26' it was actually found only 90" off prediction, an easy catch.

2007 DA had only been seen for three weeks after discovery early last year and was due to make a close approach from the sunward side and moving rapidly up from the northern horizon during February. With a 3-sigma positional uncertainty of +/- 7 degrees (double that of 2005 BT1 mentioned last month), even at a relatively bright mag +17 it seemed a daunting task to start searching for it. However, it was picked up less than 5'(!) from prediction in the first set of images taken, so no laborious search was needed this time!

A 'Bright Recovery Opportunities' web page is maintained by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) at http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/NEO/BrightRecovery.html, worth keeping an eye on for the occasional NEO like these two that is bright enough for amateurs to recover at 2nd opposition.

Another seven newly discovered fast moving NEOs were followed during the month, all closer than the 22 Lunar Distances (LDs) that 2006 DU22 was observed at. The closest was 2008 CF22, followed on the morning of Feb 10 at a distance of just 1.7 LD, moving at nearly 200"/min. This was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on the 9th, but had been recorded over 8 hours earlier from La Sagra Observatory (OLS) in Spain, but unfortunately not noticed until the next day. Reiner Stoss, who mentors students at the observatory gave me this account of their luck...

"That rock (OLS110) was found as 2 arcmin long trails on two 240s exposures. One of my students (Stefan Cikota) used one 36-cm f/2 remotely at OLS to make second nights for our MBA discoveries. Unfortunately he reduced the images only the next afternoon. He alerted me quickly and I checked and reported quickly, but soon after I submitted the astrometry, I got the reply from Mr. A. U. Tomatic that it is already on the NEOCP with a Catalina temporary designation."

After missing discovery credit on that one they didn't have to wait long before their next interesting find. I noticed 'OLS111' get posted on the NEO Confirmation Page at about 01:45 UT on 10 Feb, mag +18.4 and predicted to be moving at 2"/min west to east, in Hydra with an uncertainty area of less than 2'. It had been discovered from OLS only 2 hours before and the discovery positions were still well within the same field of view I was taking, but after careful checking I could not find any trace of a moving object. I emailed Reiner at 02:16 UT to say I couldn't find anything, only to hear back that he had managed to get it again from one of the remotely operated telescopes on Mallorca, but it had already accelerated to a speed of 8"/min! I quickly moved my telescope to the indicated position, much further east than originally indicated and picked it up easily at 02:42 UT, moving even faster at 12"/min. It was obviously already very close to Earth and closing in very fast. Both Reiner and I sent our new positions into the MPC and after working out an orbit using FindOrb, I alerted the MPC that it appeared to be in Earth orbit and due to make a very close approach the next day, suggesting that it might be an artificial satellite or a *very* small NEO. By 03:08 UT the MPC removed it from the NEO Confirmation Page with the note 'was not a minor planet'.

It turned out to be artificial satellite 2007-004B = THEMIS B, which is one of 5 satellites launched in Feb 2007 to study the Earth's magnetosphere, with 2007-004B being in a 4 day orbit and the others in 2 and 1 day orbits, every 4th day all 5 satellites line up down the Earth's magnetospheric tail and take simultaneous readings. With an apogee distance more half way to the Moon and at that point appearing almost stationary (in artificial satellite terms), 2007-004B had been 'discovered' as a NEO three times in the last few months before OLS picked it up and no doubt will be re-discovered again and again in the coming months.

Kevin Hills, J66

Kevin reports; I started out using CCD Soft to search for and measure the position of objects and the software would automatically insert its own reference codes (BSQ001,002 etc.) After the event I'd get an auto-generated message back from the MPC giving the correct designation.  In the reports below; BSQ173 = K07T15G, BSQ336 = G6600, BSQ275 = K02TN2B, BSQ235 = K07S11E, BSQ220 = K07VI90.  However, I never really got along with CCD Soft and went in search of something new.  After reviewing the slides from last summer's meeting at Newbury on your website and browsing through Peter Birtwhistle's site I have now switched to Astrometrica, something that I'm much more comfortable with.  So hopefully you'll recognise my designations in the future...  (Weather here has been awful for ages, by the way.  It's depressing).

Occultations

Andrew Elliott

Andrew reports ;  My negative report of this Transatlantic event (discovered by OccultWatcher!). This was also an unprecedented 5th consecutive night here in which the sky was clear from horizon to horizon!  This made it possible to see stars at low elevation.
